Department of Otolaryngology

Sophia Dang, MD

Dr. Sophia Dang is a Brooklyn native and an artist-turned resident who grew up in a close-knit family and multilingual community by the sea.  Growing up, her parents both spoke up to 5 languages and her neighbors spoke multiple languages.  She grew up wanting to be a traveling artist or to join the circus much to the dismay of her parents.  After graduating with a degree in Studio Art and Art History, and minors in Business Management and Digital Arts/Media, Sophia lived and backpacked throughout Korea, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia for a year and worked as an artist in NYC after.  She also attended art classes in the same studio as Frank Netter once did and biked over 150 miles each week throughout NYC.  Afterwards, she decided to go to medical school, graduating from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and started residency at UPMC.  Sophia chose UPMC for its training, reputation, and leadership in the field of Otolaryngology and the wide diversity of patients that require Head and Neck intervention.  Her mentors throughout her medical career have all trained at UPMC or are practicing here.  To this day, she still retains her Brooklyn qualities fit for a surgical residency and still walks, talks, and eats quickly and simultaneously.
